This snack is prepared very simply. Potatoes need to be cleaned, boiled, taken out of the water. Finely chop the herring and onion. Some pieces of herring should be left uncut, for decoration.
Mash the potatoes until they are mashed (without water), let them cool.
Add the chopped herring and onion to the mashed potatoes (leave it a little for sprinkling), mix. Season with sour cream and mix again. You can add a little black ground pepper (I did not add it).
Put the finished snack on the cut pieces of black bread, put a slice of herring on top.
When serving, sprinkle with the remaining green onions and you can either paprika, or tomatoes, or a mixture of peppers (dry, ground). For the information and the recipe, thank you to the project “The Power of Traditions”.

Apparently, our ancestors used herring for food from a very long time. In the Baltic, the Germans, who had a trading post in Polotsk, were engaged in herring fishing. In the XVI-XVIII this fish was one of the most popular imported goods. There were shops where you could buy it in almost every city and town. By the way, the opinion that herring was available only to the gentry is wrong. For example, an ordinary resident of Mogilev at the end of the XVII century could afford to buy a few herring every day. Pike, bream and even perch were more expensive.
