Peel the pumpkin and cut into small pieces (about 1×2 cm).
In a large saucepan, boil the syrup from sugar and water. Add pumpkin, cinnamon, and cloves to the sugar syrup. Squeeze the juice from the orange and add it to the syrup along with the zest. Bring to a boil, cook for 5 minutes, remove the pan from the heat, cool to room temperature.
