  5. In the same pan, add the oil and fry the carrots and onions until lightly golden.

  8. Add the sauerkraut, stir, and simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes.
  9. Add salt, sugar, cumin, pepper mixture, chili pepper. Mix it up.

  11. Put the bay leaf, dry herbs if desired, mix. If it seems a little dry, then add the vegetable broth or just water, mix. Simmer with the lid closed for 10 minutes over medium heat.
