One of the most popular and strong drinks. Sweet and sour and as alcoholic as possible, the Long Island cocktail has its own well-recognized taste and aroma. It's not difficult to cook it yourself.

  1. How to make a Long Island cocktail? Prepare all the necessary ingredients. The Long Island is typically served in a tall glass called a highball glass. Traditionally, the glass is filled to the top with ice cubes, but adjust according to your preference. I prefer less ice to avoid diluting the drink's flavor as it melts.

  2. Pour vodka into the glass. Bartenders often use special jigger measuring cups, but at home, kitchen scales and a regular shot glass work well.

  5. Add the rum. While white rum is used in the classic recipe, dark rum can also be used for a different flavor profile.

  7. Squeeze lemon or lime juice directly into the glass, depending on your preference. I recommend using a strainer to prevent any seeds from getting into the cocktail. Mix the cocktail with a teaspoon.

  9. Garnish the glass with lemon slices or lime segments. For my version with lime juice, I added lime segments directly to the cocktail. Serve the Long Island Ice Tea with two straws. Enjoy your drink!

Recipe Notes

Sugar syrup can easily be made at home. Simply combine equal parts of sugar and water in a saucepan, then bring to a boil while stirring constantly. Ensure that all sugar crystals are fully dissolved. Once dissolved, allow the syrup to cool before using.

The Long Island Ice Tea cocktail, often referred to simply as "Long Island," was concocted during the Prohibition era in the northeastern United States, particularly on Long Island, New York. It was cleverly disguised as tea to evade detection. Interestingly, it is still occasionally served in teapots or French presses today.

The Long Island is renowned for its high alcohol content, making it one of the strongest long drinks in the International Bartenders Association's repertoire. Exercise caution when enjoying this cocktail.

For clear ice cubes, it's best to use cold boiled or purified non-carbonated water. Avoid using tap water as it can impart an unpleasant taste to the drink. Boil the water for about 2 minutes, then allow it to cool. Repeat the boiling process and let the water cool to room temperature before pouring it into ice molds. Freeze the molds until the ice is completely solid.
