  1. How to make a cheese sandwich? Gather the ingredients. For a single sandwich, here are the proportions. Opt for high-quality, natural cheese that melts well. You have the freedom to choose the type of cheese you prefer—whether it's grated from a block, pre-sliced, or freshly cut. Cheddar is a classic choice, but even processed cheese slices work well.

  2. Classic cheese sandwiches often use toast bread, like mine. However, you can use any bread, from a loaf to white or wholemeal varieties; although, I haven't tested this recipe with rye bread. Ensure the butter is softened by removing it from the refrigerator in advance. Use high-quality butter without vegetable fats. Spread butter on one side of both slices of bread.

  3. Place a frying pan over low heat. I prefer using a pan with a non-stick coating and a thick bottom. Add a tablespoon of butter to the pan and let it melt. I always add a bit of vegetable oil to prevent the butter from burning during frying.

  4. Lay one slice of bread in the pan with the buttered side down. Place the cheese on top, either grated or in slices. Cover the pan with a lid and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Wait until the cheese begins to melt.

  5. Once the cheese starts melting, place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing up. Gently press down on the sandwich with a spatula to help the cheese adhere to the bread.

  6. Check the bottom slice of bread in the pan—if it's golden brown, carefully flip the sandwich over and fry until the other side reaches the same level of browning. Avoid increasing the heat, as the butter can burn quickly. Once done, remove the sandwich from the pan and serve immediately while the cheese is still hot.

  7. If you used toast bread, cut the sandwich diagonally into two halves—this is the classic presentation. Enjoy your delicious cheese sandwich!

Recipe Notes

Any type of cheese works well for this dish—whether it's hard, semi-hard, or soft, such as mozzarella. The key is to choose a flavorful, high-quality cheese without any milk fat substitutes that melts nicely when heated.

Remember that the choice of frying pan is crucial for the success of any recipe.

It's essential to note that oils have a temperature limit before they start to smoke, leading to the formation of harmful substances, including carcinogens. Be mindful of not exceeding this temperature threshold when cooking.
