- To prepare American-style macaroni and cheese, gather the necessary ingredients. Any pasta shape works, preferably hollow ones (such as macaroni or penne). You'll also need two types of hard cheese with different flavors, or a combination of mozzarella and hard cheese (such as mozzarella and Maasdam).
- Properly boil the pasta by using a spacious saucepan and adding 1 liter of water per 100 grams of pasta. Season with salt to taste. It's crucial to add the pasta to boiling water to prevent sticking together. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until al dente (the cooking time is usually indicated on the package). Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander without rinsing it with water.
Macaroni and cheese can indeed be prepared without baking in the oven. Simply combine the cooked pasta with the sauce and sprinkle with cheese. However, many prefer the baked cheese crust as it adds a rich flavor to the dish.
Keep in mind that ovens can vary, so the temperature and cooking time may differ from the recipe instructions.
To ensure the oven reaches the desired temperature, preheat it in advance (about 10-20 minutes before cooking).
Any heat-resistant baking dish will work for this recipe. If using a silicone mold, there's no need to grease it with butter or margarine. However, it's advisable to lightly grease metal, ceramic, or glass dishes with vegetable oil to prevent the pasta from sticking and burning.
